Road maps for the future tech creation
The global needs will guide the research and innovation in new ways. The climate crisis calls for solutions to be implemented in faster ways than before. Research to business is an agenda for an increasing number of academicians. Entrepreneurship is to be credited for also in the academic career. Publishing takes new turns. Open publishing is already the required way. Next will be open innovation. If we create five innovative steps in the research, decide to commercialize one, then the other ones are to be available for others. High impact factor publishing is not the effective way for research to business. Nobody will call a researcher from the other side of the world because of reading a high impact factor publication and offer a business concept. It will happen from local and personal networks. In the country, regional. New publishing platforms are on their way. Publish locally, each local researcher being responsible for their own facts and ethics.
Implementing a sustainable technology is a long process. We will have to collaborate over years. This sets requirements on honesty and ethics. We will only continue to collaborate with those acting in ethical ways. Key enabling technologies will find new partners to replace the ones which have not the sufficient degree of ethics. The sustainable goals for 2050 are still far away. We have to realize that our best effort for global sustainability is to support the young. They will create new ideas, new collaborations. Inspire others. They will have their own PhD students and postdocs. Who in turn will create new ideas, new collaborations? and will a cascade effect of impact creation.
A large part of carbon dioxide reduction in 2050 is coming from research and development today. New technologies emerge which jointly will reduce the effect of climate crisis. Some disasters may be avoided, lives of people will be saved. It is our responsibility to act with our best efforts. Together, collaboration is the only way to create the necessary value chains. Take research findings in lab to higher technology readiness level. Make it acceptable for industry and society to implement in a market based on economical as well as sustainable values.
The networks are the ways to come to new grounds. Meeting at conferences, events, workshops, and other places are the doors to the unexpected. The novel research avenues which arise from meeting individuals active in other disciplines, from other cultures. The international aspect is necessary or the global opportunity creation. The implementation will not follow the original plan. We have to start and then be adaptive to the dynamics of business from research. Find the pains for the industries so we can shorten the link between research to industry by addressing the challenges in existing and future technologies already today. Predict the future avenues by radical technology leaps suggested by research topics which grow from the unexpected ideas when meeting others.
Net-zero, green technology, global sustainability. The key feature for these is innovation. That has also to be implemented to business. Place based innovation, growing from the local to the global. Creating links by clustering effects which are not physical. Competence, digitalization, artificial intelligence, digital twins, circular economy, recycling, safety standards.
At the end it is up to our own choices. People make collaboration, business together. Individuals can make the change which will have sustainable impact when acting jointly. As a research and innovation coordinator, it is my aim to support those who decide to make their best effort to give momentum in the research that will be the backbone of solutions in 2050 and beyond.
